Oasis Avon Team Completes 39 Mile Walk

The ten members of the Oasis team for the Avon Walk for Cancer did a terrific job on its 39 mile 2 day walk on June 3 and 4. The 12 weeks of training preparing for the event (each member of the team walked well over 200 miles this spring in training) paid off in that all of the team members completed the walk in good health and not too much the worse for wear – other than a few blisters and a bit of sunburn. It was an enormous accomplishment and a testament to proper preparation.

The walk led from Soldier Field north and west to the Rogers Park neighborhood of Chicago where the team overnighted in tents, resuming the walk back to Soldier Field the following day. The spirit and emotion of the event was something to experience and all of the members of the team found it to be a moving and rewarding experience. Most inspiring were the many cheering onlookers who applauded and thanked the walkers for their help in the fight against breast cancer. The money raised from the walk will be used for research for cures and prevention as well as grass roots efforts at making services available to all. Details about the use of the funds can be seen at the Avon website: www.avonwalk.org.

The Oasis team raised a collective total of $36,428. Some of the funds were raised from our generous Oasis club members who participated in a raffle at the club.

The team consisted of Leeann Wille, Mary Ann Peters, Joan Stopka, Kathy Johnson, Karen Roche, Susan Walton, Heather Owen, Sierra Shultz, Willa Shultz, Kelly Bojan, Amy Goodman, Mary Lipari, Irma Zaragoza and Beatrice Zaragoza.

Holiday Toy Drive

In conjunction with Back in Balance, Oasis members generously contribute to our Holiday toy collection. The toys go to local organizations which see that the toys are given to families in need.

Oasis Run for the Roses Team

A band of sisters who gather to "get it together" for LaGrange Park's annual 5K run/walk. The Runners' Club spends the spring working together to prepare. No experience (or talent!) needed.

Fundraisers that Fit

Oasis members can bring us a fundraising need and we'll respond by offering a free month's membership to raffle off for the cause.

Oasis will also work with non-profit groups to offer a contribution for each member that joins - kind of like the Jewel/Dominicks Shop and Save that we all know so well.
